2016 Chevrolet Camaro bows

The fanfare may not rival the hoopla surrounding Ford's 2015 Mustang makeover and its 50th anniversary, but Chevy's sixth generation Camaro seems to have the credentials to keep it at the head of the pony car pack.
Unveiled at the Detroit Grand Prix circuit on Belle Isle Park, the redesigned Camaro bears a strong resemblance to the fifth generation. This is not too surprising given the success of the current version, which has regularly outsold Mustang over the last five years.
But aside from refining the current shape, the new car shares very little with the current model. New underpinnings, GM's Alpha platform, adapted from the Cadillac ATS and CTS. Two new engines, plus a more powerful edition of the 6.2-liter LT-1 V-8. A new 8-speed automatic transmission option, all-new sheetmetal with improved aerodynamics, all-new interiors.
Tauter package
Thanks to its Alpha bones, the 2016 Camaro is smaller than generation five, losing almost an inch of width, to 74.7 inches, and shrinking 2.3 inches in overall length to 188.3 inches, on a wheelbase (110.7) reduced by 1.6 inches. And at 53.1 inches tall, the roof is 1.1 inches lower.
Tidier dimensions and extensive use of lightweight materials add up to sharply reduced curb weights, over 200 pounds, depending on trim levels, compared to the current Camaro according to Chevrolet.
There are three engine choices: the 6.2-liter V-8 that propels the high performance SS model, generating 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque; a new 3.6-liter V-6, rated for 335 hp and 275 lb-ft; and, also new to the lineup, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, 275 hp, 295 lb-ft. It's only the second time a 4-cylinder has been offered in the Camaro, much more potent than the tepid Iron Duke four offered in the early 1980s, an era of universal anemia among pony cars.
More power and economy
All three engines use direct fuel injection, and the V-6 and V-8 feature variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. The V-6 and V-8 also boast higher output than the previous versions, and the LT-1 V-8, shared with the latest Corvette, makes this the "most powerful Camaro SS" ever, according to Chevrolet. Aside from an expectation of an EPA highway rating of "over 30 mpg" for the 2.0 turbo, fuel economy numbers are still to come.
Transmission choices include two Tremec 6-speed manual transmissions, with differing load ratings, one for the turbo four and the V-6, another for the V-8; and two new 8-speed automatics with paddle shifters, ditto.
Chevy notes a 28 percent increase in chassis rigidity for the new Camaro, as well as a new multi-link strut suspension up front, a new 5-link rear suspension system, and a new electric rack-and-pinion power steering setup with a quicker ratio. Suspension options include GM's magnetorheological shock absorbers (Magnetic Ride Control) for the SS version, capable of auto-adjusting to changing road conditions and operator demands up to 1000 times per second.
Performance brakes and tires
All 2016 Camaro offer Brembo brake packages (standard and more robust on the SS), and all will roll on Goodyear tires. LT versions will come with 18-inch alloy wheels, while the SS will wear 20-inchers, with the option of 21-inch forged alloys wearing Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 run-flats. Chevrolet claims that the new SS will turn quicker race track lap times than the 1LE, the current road circuit champ.
The Camaro's cabin features upgraded materials, more soft-touch surfaces, redesigned instrumentation that puts secondary gauges in a location requiring less eye redirection, novel center HVAC vents that also adjust temperature, and a head up display option.
As for the styling, the design team obviously felt they had a winning look and worked to preserve it while simultaneously giving the Camaro a trimmer, more athletic appearance. But the high beltline and narrow windows maintain the subtly sinister presence of the current Camaro.
"I don't think it looks angry," says Tom Peters, the design chief who was also responsible for the current Corvette."We like to think it looks hungry."
Two trim levels at first
There will be basically two trim levels when the new Camaro rolls into showrooms this fall, LT and SS, and pricing will remain a mystery until that time draws near.
That leaves just two questions. Number one, how about a convertible? GM development chief Mark Reuss says "there will definitely be a convertible," although just when remains to be seen.
And how about that most iconic of Camaros, the Z28?
"I love the Z28," says Reuss. "End of story." Or, more likely, just the beginning.

2016 Buick Cascada opens new horizons

The first drop-top to be part of the division's U.S. lineup in a quarter of a century, the 2016 Buick Cascada debuted in Detroit. Arriving in showrooms early next year, this compact, front-drive 2+2 convertible is a mildly restyled and enhanced version of the Opel Cascada which was introduced in Europe in 2013. Envisioned from the start as an open-air exercise, the Cascada matches handsomely sculpted bodywork with a rigid core structure. A near visual clone of its Opel cousin, the Cascada boasts a revamped grille not currently shared by any other Buick model-a design cue that departs from the current waterfall style. The car is also fitted with subtly modified fascias to accommodate federal bumper requirements and minor detail tweaks along with various equipment upgrades.
Inside, this new Buick offers premium amenities and more, starting with a soft-touch dash, leather upholstery, heated front seats/steering wheel, power seatbelt "presenters" for the front buckets and a power-fold feature for the rear seat backs. On the technology/connectivity front, the Cascada boasts Buick IntelliLink with a 7.0-inch color screen, navigation, OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot, Siri Eyes Free for Apple iOS6 or newer, lane-departure warning, rear park assist, rearview camera, Rainsense wipers and pop-up bars behind the rear seats that automatically deploy when a potential rollover is sensed. Crowning the Cascada is a multilayer power-activated soft top that can be raised/lowered in 17 seconds while the car is traveling at speeds of up to 31 mph. When running open, it folds neatly away under a hard tonneau that trims trunk space from 13.4 to a still-respectable 9.8 cubic feet.
Based on GM's Delta platform architecture and featuring a 106.1-inch wheelbase that makes rear seat legroom viable for most average-size adults, the Cascada's well-tuned suspension pairs control-optimizing HiPer Struts up front with a Watts Z-link-enhanced torsion beam at the rear. Rounding out the mix is an electrically-assisted power steering system and a standard 20-inch wheel/tire fitment. Sole engine at launch will be a 200-horsepower/1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that develops 208 lb-ft of torque but can crank out up to 221 lb-ft for short bursts using an overboost function. It will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Pricing for the 2016 Buick Cascada will be released closer to its on-sale date.

2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i redesigned for a fall debut

After just over two years on the U.S. market, the BMW X1 has been redesigned and a slighter, larger version of this versatile compact crossover SUV will debut this fall as a 2016 model. With the introduction of a new X1, the rear-drive 4-cylinder sDrive28i and more powerful 300-horsepower 6-cylinder xDrive35i will be dropped from the lineup in favor of just one model, the 2.0-liter turbocharged xDrive28i.
The new 2016 BMW X1 will be slightly less powerful, producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, down slightly from the previous model's 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission carries over. BMW says the X1 is good for 0-60 mph acceleration of 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.
Larger package
The 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i stands a full inch and a half taller than the previous iteration. This results in the front seat passengers sitting about an inch higher than the previous model, while the rear seats are mounted 2.5 inches higher. This allows for better visibility for both front and rear occupants.
There's also more rear legroom, a gain of 1.5 inches on the base model and up to 2.6 inches more on models equipped with an adjustable second row. That rear bench features a 40/20/40 triple split. Power front buckets are now standard on all BMW X1s.
Redesigned in an out
In addition to a bolder exterior look that features a larger split kidney design and more upright appearance thanks to the taller package, the interior features trim upgrades and a choice of either a standard 6.5-inch center console screen or a larger 8.8-inch display. In addition to the standard 7-speaker audio system, buyers can opt for a 360 watt 12-speaker Harmon-Kardon sound system.
Riding on a 105.1-inch wheelbase with an overall length of 175.4 inches, the 2016 BMW X1 still retains fairly compact dimensions making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The vehicle rides on 18-inch wheels, has a fully-independent suspension and BMW promises road manners consistent with its sporty image. The 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i is slated to go on sale in the U.S. this fall. While pricing hasn't been announced, expect it to be in the neighborhood of the current model, which retails at $33,695.

2016 Audi R8 V10 and V10 Plus set to stun

The second generation Audi R8 debuts in Geneva with more style, added power and even greater capability. While its form may be familiar, the automaker's mid-engine supercar has been remade from the ground up and now incorporates new design, engineering and technology from Audi's successful racing programs. In its most potent R8 V10 Plus form, this exhilarating two-seater is simply "the most powerful and fastest series-production Audi of all time."
Similar in size to the original, the new Audi R8 is slightly wider -- to accommodate increased track dimensions - and benefits from a tasteful reshaping of its aluminum bodywork and carbon fiber accents that give it a more powerful, elegant appearance. Up front, the reshaped single frame grille is flanked by restyled LED headlamps - which can be upgraded to Audi's laser-spec units in markets where they're legal - and outboard air intakes that now feature vertical channeling elements. The redesign also introduces a new split-form side air blade adds texture to the R8's profile while the tail has bolder rear lamps, reconfigured exhaust outlets and a new diffuser. An auto-deploying spoiler is standard on the R8 V10 while the R8 V10 Plus is fitted with fixed wing made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic.
Lighter yet stronger structure
Beneath its skin, the R8 features a new Audi Space Frame that uses carbon fiber to further enhance the stiffness. This multi-material construction trims roughly 110 pounds from the weight of the core structure while increasing its rigidity by some 40 percent. The R8's chassis retains its aluminum-intensive double-wishbone design which benefits from weight-saving tweaks. New electromechanical power steering complements the standard Audi Drive Select dynamic handling system which equipped with adaptive magnetic shocks and speed-variable dynamic steering. The R10's lightweight steel brakes give way to lighter carbon-ceramic super stoppers on the V10 Plus while its 19-inch alloys wrapped in sticky 245/35-front and 295/35-rear tires are replaced by on the Plus model by 20-inch alternatives wearing 245/30 and 305/30 rubber.
More power, more efficiency and more fun
The 5.2-liter naturally aspirated FSI V10 in both of these new Audi R8 models has been significantly revised to include a new dual-mode (direct and indirect) fuel-injection, a racing-style dry-sump lubrication system as well as cylinder-deactivation and start/stop technology. The result boosts output and reduces fuel consumption by roughly 10 percent compared to the previous iteration. In the R8 V10, the engine is tuned to make 532 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, giving it a 0-62 mph sprint time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph. The R8 V10 Plus version cranks out 601 ponies - identical to the engine in its corporate cousin, the Lamborghini Huracan - and 413 lb-ft of twist. The Plus accelerates to 62 mph in 3.2 ticks and tops out at 205 mph.
Both R8 models are fitted with a 7-speed paddle-shift S tronic automatic transmission that includes launch control and a fuel-saving coasting mode. Rounding out the mix is the latest version of Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive that replaces the existing viscous clutch on the front axle with an electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch and now allows unrestricted and variable torque distribution to either axle depending on available traction. While the V10 and V10 Plus will be the only R8 models available at launch, Audi confirmed that a new R8 e-tron electric variant with twice as much power and nearly 280 miles of per-charge range is in the pipeline. A V8 version of the R8 also is expected at some point for at least several world markets.
The R8's driver-focused cabin deftly interweaves competition character with luxury refinements, starting with two kinds model-specific sport seats and a Multifunction Plus Performance steering wheel that also adds additional capability on the R8 V10 Plus model. Like all new Audis, the R8 is fitted with the automaker's configurable Virtual Cockpit instrumentation. Other standard touches include the MMI controller, navigation and Audi Connect with a Wi-Fi hotspot. In addition to standard Alcantara/Nappa leather or pure Nappa interior appointments, the new R8 will offer numerous interior and exterior trim options, including a bespoke Matte Camouflage Green for the R8 V10 Plus. The 2016 Audi R8 V10 lineup will arrive in showrooms here next January. Pricing will be announced closer to the official on-sale date.

2016 Acura NSX unveiled in Detroit (+VIDEO)

One of the biggest debuts at the 2015 North American International Auto Show is the arrival of the 2016 Acura NSX. After trotting out a few different versions of the prototype at various shows over the last couple of years, the production version of the NSX has finally been made public. It'll fly under Acura's flag here in the U.S. but Honda will market the NSX under its badge around the world.
"Our commitment was to create an all-new NSX that is true to the heritage of NSX-a supercar that delivers a new driving experience, one where every part of the vehicle is respectful of the smartest part of the car, the driver," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president and general manager of the Acura division. "The soul of a car is the emotional connection it makes with the driver. With the NSX, that connection will be intense and immediate."
Hybrid power
Following in the footsteps of other recently introduced supercars like the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari, the 2016 Acura NSX will rely on a hybrid powertrain. An all-new twin-turbo mid-mounted V6 engine and three electric motors (one in back and two more up front), will power the latest NSX. Acura withheld output numbers and overall engine size but we expect to learn all of that soon. A twin-clutch 9-speed transmission will handle gear changes and Acura's SH-AWD system will assist the NSX when taking corners or braking at speed. Acura has already said that the 2016 NSX's acceleration is on par with the Ferrari 458, which draws power from a 4.5-liter V8 and is good for 562 horsepower, while returning fuel economy numbers similar to that of a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. NSX enthusiasts will remember that the previous generation matched the Ferrari 348 in power and with today's announcement it appears that the NSX has a new rival in the 458.
Acura didn't disclose a price for the 2016 NSX but we're expecting it to be in the neighborhood of $150,000. That would put it on par with the Audi R8 and is a bargain when you consider that the Ferrari 458 costs almost three times as much. Honda's Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio has been tapped to produce the new NSX but production will be limited to ensure a high demand.
Expect to see the 2016 Acura NSX on the road later this year. Pricing should also be released by then and, needless to say, we're anxious to get behind the wheel of it, so stay tuned.

2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

Inside, the 2016 Chevy Tahoe does away with the integrated SD card reader in the center console as well as the AM/FM stereo with CD player, officially marking the end of an integrated CD player for the Tahoe. Meanwhile, the SUV gains the reconfigurable gauge cluster, head-up display (HUD), IntelliBeam headlamps, and Lane Keep Assist, which replaces Lane Departure Warning.
